2014 marks the 10 year anniversary of the “Race Against Hunger”, the largest 5K in the Central Valley benefitting Visalia Emergency Aid Council (VEAC). For over 83 years VEAC has provided food, clothing and shelter to needy families in Tulare County. From its humble beginnings in 2005 at a supermarket parking lot with 250 participants, the “Race Against Hunger” has grown to over 5,000 participants comprised of businesses, civic organizations, families and friends. It has become the premiere advocacy event for alleviating hunger in Tulare County.
Visalia Emergency Aid Council also believes that we must inspire the future generation to care for their community and have incorporated a “Kid’s Race” in our annual event. The ¼ mile race provides children with the opportunity to give back…“Children Helping Children”…while promoting health, fitness, and fun.
The 5K run/2 mile walk challenges participants to form teams and creatively dress for the event on Thanksgiving morning. The race kicks off at 6:30 am and is usually completed by 9:30 am. The “Race Against Hunger” provides a large portion of the annual funding for the VEAC food pantry and day to day operations required to assist over 800 families each month.
Iris East, VEAC Development Director, works countless hours alongside hundreds of dedicated volunteers who donate their time each year to make the event a success. It is only through the volunteer’s efforts and selflessness that VEAC can compassionately serve children and families in need throughout the year.
The staff at VEAC invite you to start a business or family tradition of your own and join us on Thanksgiving Morning to alleviate hunger in Tulare County.
